While decisions about equipment are critical, the layout and design of a roastery are equally important. A well-planned facility isn’t just about fitting in all the necessary machinery; the layout directly impacts the success of a roasting operation. Poor design choices can lead to workflow bottlenecks, safety hazards, and even costly redesigns when looking to scale. By putting more intention behind the design and layout of their facility, roasters can create a safer, more efficient workspace that supports higher output and greater long-term growth potential. Zoe Stanley-Foreman speaks to Gian Pietro Balboni at IMF Roasters about how to design a functional roasting plant that meets needs and demand both now and in the future. #PerfectDailyGrind #CoffeeRoasters #CoffeeRoastery Photo by: IMF Roasters https://lnkd.in/e5iRtcJU

All levels of the supply chain are feeling the effects of a sustained high C price. While roasters and traders grapple with tighter margins and barriers to cash flow, producers are faced with difficult decisions about where to sell their coffee to make the most money. Some are declining long-term contracts to sell at higher prices instead, hoping to reinvest in their farms. Traditional trade dynamics are shifting, and everyone needs to adapt and remain agile. For producers specifically, there’s a narrative that higher prices mean higher profits, but the reality is more complex. Unpredictable weather, rising costs of fertilisers, and labour shortages all add pressure to farmers’ operations, meaning many still aren’t reaping the benefits of coffee production. On 2 April, in a shocking yet predicted move, US President Trump announced sweeping tariffs on more than 180 countries. Effective 5 April, there is a universal 10% tariff on any imports coming into the US. For some countries, including major coffee-producing nations like Vietnam, Indonesia, and India, the “reciprocal” tariffs are higher. Despite Trump’s claims that other countries pay for price hikes, it will be US importers that foot the bill, which will inevitably trickle down to consumers. Many products, including coffee, will become more expensive in the US in the coming months. On the other side of the Atlantic, major European roasters, including Lavazza, illy, Nestlé, and Douwe Egberts, are in talks with grocery retailers about passing on rising green coffee costs to consumers. According to a recent Reuters article, retail prices for coffee could increase by up to 20% in the next few weeks. Some supermarket chains, including Albert Heijn in the Netherlands, promise to absorb some of the additional costs. The company briefly ran out of JDE Peet’s products in March before restocking them at higher prices. In Brazil, where the real has weakened against the US dollar, coffee prices are climbing even faster. Shortly after two quick consecutive hikes, major roaster 3 Coracoes raised its prices by over 14% in early March. According to ABIC, Brazilian supermarket coffee prices have already surged 40% this year, with more increases expected in the coming weeks. The impact of high, sustained coffee prices is a global phenomenon, compounded by geopolitical instability and a trade war that is now well underway. It's going to be a challenging, tough situation for many producers, exporters, importers, and roasters. There could be, however, a silver lining. Many in the industry are pointing out that, due to the high C price, the gap between specialty and commercial-grade coffee has never been smaller. As supermarket coffee prices continue to rise, especially for lower-quality instant and roast & ground products, it could present a valuable opportunity for specialty coffee roasters to capture the attention of a new audience. For over a decade, Producer & Roaster Forum has hosted groundbreaking events at origin that facilitate long-term connections between international producers, roasters, exporters, importers, and baristas. On 27 & 28 March 2025, the tenth edition of PRF was held at the Copantl Hotel & Convention Centre in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, marking its biggest and most impactful event to date. In addition to the PRF Voices programme, which featured lectures from leading industry figures, the milestone event hosted panels, workshops, and cuppings. It also included the fourth Global Roasting Contest, the sixth Cold Brew Coffee Championship, the second Cacao Masters Cup, the first Global Cupping Championship, the third Global Coffee Awards, the second PRF Seed scholarship initiative, and an all-new Producer-Roaster Matchmaking programme. Mushroom coffee has captured the attention of health-conscious millennials and Gen Z consumers who are no longer satisfied with simple beverage options. Combining the purported health benefits of adaptogenic mushrooms such as lion's mane, Chaga, and reishi, these functional coffee products offer consumers more than a caffeine boost. For roasters and coffee shops looking to stay ahead of the curve, adding mushroom coffee to their menus could be a strategic move, but quality needs to be a priority. Bhavi Patel speaks to Jordan G.L. Hardin at ALFRED coffee content creator Vivian Nguyen, and Brandon Mizrahie at Renude to learn more. #PerfectDailyGrind #FunctionalCoffee #MushroomCoffee Photo by: Renude https://lnkd.in/eBWnVaGA

Against a backdrop of rising coffee prices, soaring business costs, and higher interest rates, market competition has intensified. Sourcing from new, exciting origins has always been a unique selling point in specialty coffee, but it’s arguably never been more critical than now. With interest in high-quality Nigerian-grown coffee rising in recent years, the government and key stakeholders are investing in and hoping to revitalise the country’s coffee market – but challenges persist. Bhavi Patel speaks to Abdulrahman Hayel Sayeed, the managing director and co-founder of Green Bean Nigeria, to learn more. #PerfectDailyGrind #CoffeeOrigin #SpecialtyCoffee Photo by: Green Bean Nigeria https://lnkd.in/eSD2UW4Z

The coffee industry in Eastern Europe has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, evolving from a nascent movement into a vibrant and dynamic market. Between 2016 and 2020, Eastern European green coffee imports increased at an average annual rate of 3.3%, representing steady growth. Once dominated by traditional coffee consumption habits, countries like Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Hungary are now home to a flourishing specialty coffee culture characterised by third wave cafés and skilled baristas. Like in many other markets, specialty coffee events are often at the heart of this growth, creating vital networking opportunities and fostering community. Bhavi Patel speaks to Mihai Panfil at COFFEeAST Festival to understand how events are accelerating market growth and diversification in Eastern Europe. #PerfectDailyGrind #CoffeeEvents #SpecialtyCoffee Photo by: COFFEeAST Festival https://lnkd.in/edGUuPPK

We care about your opinion! 🙌🏻☕ #PerfectDailyGRrind Political instability has long affected the coffee supply chain, but its impacts have arguably never been more apparent. US President Trump has recently imposed, and then quickly postponed or rescinded, tariffs on several producing countries – and US consumers would have to foot the bill.

Between January and February, some of Brazil’s key coffee-growing regions experienced only 40 days of rain. According to industry experts, this is significantly fewer than what is needed for optimal cherry maturation, and the residual impact may last until the next harvest. Brazilian co-operative Cooxupé recently reported a pessimistic forecast for the 2025/26 harvest season, which means the C price is likely to rise throughout the coming weeks. As market volatility persists, building connections and fostering trust among supply chain stakeholders becomes all the more important. Producer & Roaster Forum (PRF), the industry’s leading producer-focused event, is currently hosting its tenth and largest edition in Honduras, bringing together thousands of producers, roasters, exporters, importers, and baristas for two days of lectures, panels, competitions, awards, and networking opportunities. Producers are front and centre at PRF, ensuring their perspectives on some of the most pressing issues in the industry are recognised and heard. While coffee prices remain high and volatile, placing producers at the forefront of conversations is essential – especially when they aren’t reaping the benefits of higher prices paid for their coffee.
